San Diego Lifeguards did not rescue the "Kelp Connection" when her distress call went out on Sunday morning. News reports were not accurate.
The "Kelp Connection" dive charter returned to Mission Bay under its own power and bilge pumps after suffering an engine malfunction and began taking on water off of Sunset Cliffs.
San Diego lifeguards did not pump out the stricken vessel and did not tow the boat back to Mission Bay as inaccurately reported.
Waterhorse Charters boat the "Humboldt" was first to respond and met the distressed boat at the entrance to Mission Bay prepared to transfer the passengers.
The Harbor Police cut off the "Humboldt" and instructed both Captains to wait with all passengers on the deck of the “Kelp Connection” with life jackets on.
The San Diego Lifeguards showed up second along with the Coast Guard and decided not to transfer the passengers.
The "Kelp Connection" proceeded to the Lifeguard station in Mission Bay "under its own power", without any assistance from the Lifeguards, other than escort service.
All passengers (divers) remained on board. I was on the "Humboldt"!!
Appreciation goes to Captain Ryan of the “Humboldt” for prompt response to the emergency call for assistance.
Good luck was on the side of Captain Greg of the “Kelp Connection” and all of the credit belongs to him for safely bringing his passengers, crew and boat back to port.
