I took Kim out to Vallecitos Point today for her first dive in more than ten years. Conditions for her welcome back dive were pretty good indeed. The vis at depth was at least 20 feet, and the point was well-defined and easy to see.
We dropped down on the sand straight out from the bathrooms. We landed over the big patch of sand dollars, and I headed us west away from them so we could settle on the sand. After we did a quick review of her skills, we headed more west and a bit south, and dropped into the valley.
The first interesting thing we saw was a sea pen sticking out of the sand. There wasn't a whole lot to see on the various sections of wall, until you look closely. We found two species of nudi, D. albopunctata, and C. apleysia. There were Catalina and black-eyed gobies, a small school of juvenile blacksmith, and three or four larger sheephead still in female phase. On the way back in we found a sea pansy, and a good-size kelp crab.
It was a good thing we went Saturday, 'cause conditions sure took a dump on Sunday.
