Hey there fellow divers. Time to share my first real
point loma dives. First stop a place some refer to as
train wheels. Max depth 105ft avg 95ft, dive time
27min brrrrrrrrr! We had plenty of air but not enough
body fat. Shivering beyond repair but worth every
goosebump. We anchored right over the top of a west
running ledge. The ledge had a large crevasse were we
could crawl in a bit without losing site of the
surface. It was so neato. Viz below 20ft was a good
30ft nice and blue like Catalina. There were amazing
outcroppings all along the ledges. I lost count of how
many spanish shawls were dancing for us. One large
Lingcod said hello and more clubtippped anemones than
the eye could see. Did not see the train wheels
however our other buddies said they were awesome:)
Plenty to see at this site. Many rock fish, red
gorgonians, dorids,bull kelp,large male sheepshead
guarding their female fortresses, blackssmiths, kelp
bass, and a few unknowns. My favorite dive in San
Diego so far, and I have had many. Dive two same spot
different direction. We swam towards the kelp beds
this time we dropped to around 50ft and just did a
lazy square around the forest. Max depth 67 and yet
again I only could withstand the chill for 27min. The
sun decided to grace us with her presence. There's
something so special about looking up through a forest
of kelp. Large schools of fish circled around us as we
made our ascent. I pointed to My buddie Tom to look at
some above him and as we both glanced up we seen a
large bat ray glide over the top of us. SO COOL!! I
will definitely be getting out to point Loma as much
as possible now that I've had a taste. Great diving
out there.
