Hi there, yes Travis and I went camping at refugio state beach. The grounds are awsome and very affordable. Beach front less than $50 a night including rv space and bbq. There are two kelp beds right off the beach. The one to the right is a further swim out but well worth it. Swim staight out south on the surface from the beach until you line up with the point to the west where small waves break and the only surfers are hangin. dropp down into 20-30ft then head west you should be crusing along some awsome rocky ledges and outcroppings. Lot's of lobster and the fishing is open here so bring your gauge and goodie bag. Now the kelp bed to the left is much closer to shore you can practically walk to it. Very popular site for instructors and their students so pick a couple of week days for camping/diving if you want the place to yourself. More to see as this kelp is thicker and more abundant. Still only maxed out at 27 feet no surge great viz and a ton of life. We just cruised from the outer south end of the kelp back and forth, east to west heading north into shore. It feels a little backwards than from la jolla because of the way california coastline is shaped. I'm so used to east being the heading for home. The usuall kelp critters around this dive site, surf perch, bat rays, star fish, lobster, a katrillion chest nut cowerys, and an octopus. So easy and fun, Trav and I will bring enough for two dives a day next time. Any one want to organize a group trip I would be happy to arrange it? Any other questions about refugio just let me know. Also I beleive they have a website, forget exactly the adress but google will know. Have fun with that!
