LJ Shores, Saturday 2/20/10
All:
The weather looked promising yesterday, after a rainy evening and despite the stiff breeze that blew up in its wake. After taking advantage of good prices at an LDS, we took our new goodies to the Shores to test them out. Other divers reported vis in the 15- to 20-foot range, so we geared up and headed out.
The wind, which had started out in the south, seemed to have swung around to the west and was blowing directly onshore. There was no surf though, and least not in front of Vallecitos St., and though there was a longshore current from the north, it was an easy kick out. We dropped in about 20 feet, and headed toward the point.
Kim is preparing to take AOW in a couple of months, so I made her do the navigating, and she mostly did a good job getting us to the wall. I quizzed her about the readings on her new computer, to make sure she knew what they meant, and she did a good job on that too - not bad for something she only just bought! We were on a mission to find the lions, and we did find a few. They weren't actively feeding, but they are still pretty to look at.
Other than that, we didn't see a whole lot, but it was still a good dive, and Kim's first since the new year. I was hoping we would blunder into a huge school of opalescen squid, but aside from a few clumps of eggs, we saw nothing to indicate their presence.
That is all.
