Default LJ Canyon and Scripps Canyon, 2/4 and 2/5

All:

Not wanting to get left high and dry by stormy weather, I did a dive Thursday night to Scripps Canyon, and Friday morning to my favorite deep spot in La Jolla Canyon. Each dive was pretty darn good.

The dive last night featured many swell sharks, two morays, no seals, but five legal lobster. In that way it will have commonality with tomorrow night's dinner, which will also feature lobster. This was probably the last dive that ellem is going to do as a San Diego resident, and while it didn't hit all her sweet spots, it hit enough of them. The vis was okay, and the surf practically non-existent, until I tried to take off my fins, at which point I got pummeled. Typical.

This morning saw us down at Vallecitos, where there were calm, glassy waters, and a low tide that made the long kick out not quite as long. The vis at depth was 15 to 20 feet, I think, and it wasn't too cold. The kelman had some trouble clearing her ears, and we landed a bit west, but we planned for extra bottom time, and had a fine dive indeed. In addition to seeing lots of vase sponges and lots of rockfish, I saw a D. spaldingi, possibly my first of the year.

Tracy thought the surf was coming up when he came back in at 11AM, but when I came back in at 1130AM, I did not think it had.

It has now started to rain. I hope that doesn't wreck the diving for this weekend, but it probably will. Oh well.

George
